S needs to make his freshman housing choice. He enrolled early so should get some priority I hope.
Years ago when I visited friends at New Grad there were frequent car break ins, anyone with a new car had to be careful or their radio might be stolen. As a result I am not encouraging him to look south of 59th Street. I know that New Grad along with many others are leaving the housing system, replaced by North but South and BJ are nice options but I wonder how safe he will be walking back from the library at night alone? He also does not enjoy the cold so the midway wind would not be something he will relish. Also he tends to be somewhat last minute so I would imagine the extra few minutes to get to class would not be good for him.
How is the new North location? Purely on safety and convenience (S tends to not eat when he is overwhelmed with work and relies on food from vending machines, so needs easy access to a cafeteria)?
S is of slight build so I worry about him walking around alone (he does not worry about himself, this is mom talking). He has traveled extensively by himself and with friends so he is not naive and takes public transportation in our city.
If it were up to me I would have him put down North first, then Max, then Snitchcok.
I realize the North culture is still TBD but he can be part of what shapes it.
Will he get this choice as a freshman if he enrolled in December?
Little concerned about Max being all athletes but equally concerned about Snitchcock being "quirky"? S is not quirky by Chicago standards (although he would definitely be considered quirky at Penn State!)
S is pretty normal, not particularly athletic but was on his high school sports teams but would never be recruited for sports. He does not drink but has no objection if others do, likes movies, dinners with friends etc. While he is more intellectual than people in his high school, he is not what I would call a quirky intellectual in the Chicago sense. He will be very happy to leave the intellectual stimulation in the class room and play a video game instead.
If he were going to Penn State or even Cornell I would probably not want him in the athletic dorm but are Chicago athletes the same as the ones who are recurited at other schools?
South sounds like a good fit except for the location.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
