Is UChicago's social life as pitiful as it is said to be?

I am very interested in a Latin major, and I have taken interest in the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), Holy Cross, and Boston College. I am also interested in UChicago partly because my Latin teacher went there and says that it does, in fact, have a great Latin department, but I wanted to hear some outside input. I would like to have a social life--I am junior in high school--and I am ranked within the top 5% of my class, but I think that there must be a balance between academics and the college party scene. There cannot be too much of either, in my opinion.
