UChicago Has the 14th Best D3 Sports Program in the Country

http://athletics.uchicago.edu/sports/genrel/2015-16/learfield-cup-final-2015-16 Three of their highest-ever placements in the rankings have occurred in the past 5 years (#16 in 2013-14, #20 in 14-15, and #14 in 15-16.) Usually, Chicago's sports program earned a rank somewhere between #40-#50. @exacademic might say we're attracting sportier nerds. It's an open question whether these athletes are nerdy or not, but it's unquestioned that, outside the D1 years, Chicago currently has more athletic talent on campus than ever before.

Arts Opportunities/Art Dorms/Special dorms and houses?

I know at some colleges, there are dorms/program houses for artists and artistic students. For example, I know a program house at one college has ceramics, drawing, etc. studios in the building for its students to access whenever. I really like UChicago's house system; are there any that are specifically arts-dedicated? If not, what are the different arts opportunities available on campus, especially for non-arts majors?

UChicago AP Credit

Okay so I have reviewed the website thoroughly and I still have a few questions. Basically my main question is: Are the General Education Requirements and General Elective Requirements different? UChicago says the maximum number of General Elective Credits from AP Exams possible is 6, which I can attain. However, if I get those 6 credits, can I in addition place out of the General Education Physical Sciences/Biological Sciences/Mathematical Sciences introductory courses with adequate AP Credit if I do not plan on majoring in one of those areas? http://collegecatalog.uchicago.edu/thecollege/degreeprogramworksheet/Degree_Program_Worksheet_2013.pdf http://collegecatalog.uchicago.edu/thecollege/examinationcreditandtransfercredit/ Essentially my situation looks like this: US History (5) = 1 General Elective Credit, AP Chemistry (4) 2 Quarters 10000 Level PHSC General Ed Credit, AP Literature (4) 3 Quarters General Elective Credit, AP French Language (3) Competency Requirement, AP Biology (5) 1 Biological Science General Education Credit, BC Calculus (4/5) 1 Mathematical Science General Education Credit About to take: AP Statistics (1 Mathematics General Education Credit) AP Physics C Mech + E&M (Max 2-3 Physical Sciences General Education Credits) AP Micro/Macro Econ (2 General Elective Credits)

2016 / 2017 Essay Prompts Released

Just received an email with the new UChicago Essay Prompts for the Class of 2021! Without further ado: 1) What is square one, and can you actually go back to it? Inspired by Maya Shaked, Class of 2018 2) Once, renowned physicist Werner Heisenberg said: “There is a fundamental error in separating the parts from the whole, the mistake of atomizing what should not be atomized. Unity and complementarity constitute reality.” Whether it’s Georges Seurat’s pointillism in “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte,” the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls, quantum physics, or any other field of your choosing, when can the parts be separated from the whole and when can they not? Inspired by Ender Sahin, Class of 2020 3) The ball is in your court—a penny for your thoughts, but say it, don’t spray it. So long as you don’t bite off more than you can chew, beat around the bush, or cut corners, writing this essay should be a piece of cake. Create your own idiom, and tell us its origin—you know, the whole nine yards. PS: A picture is worth a thousand words. Inspired by April Bell, Class of 2017, and Maya Shaked, Class of 2018 (It takes two to tango.) 4) Alice falls down the rabbit hole. Milo drives through the tollbooth. Dorothy is swept up in the tornado. Neo takes the red pill. Don’t tell us about another world you’ve imagined, heard about, or created. Rather, tell us about its portal. Sure, some people think of the University of Chicago as a portal to their future, but please choose another portal to write about. Inspired by Raphael Hallerman, Class of 2020 5) According to Lázló Babai, Professor of Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Chicago, it is unfortunate that mathematicians do not have any procedures in place for revoking theorems once their validity is established because sometimes our results would be nicer without them. If you had the power to obliterate any known truth for the sake of getting nicer results, what truth would you choose to obliterate and why? This power cannot be used as a Ctrl-Z on events in your own life. Inspired by Erin Horning, Class of 2016 6) In the spirit of adventurous inquiry, pose your own question or choose one of our past prompts. Be original, creative, thought provoking. Draw on your best qualities as a writer, thinker, visionary, social critic, sage, citizen of the world, or future citizen of the University of Chicago; take a little risk, and have fun. Explore past favorite prompts at https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/apply/essay/past-essay-questions. What do you guys think? I'm not sure which one I will end up writing. The fifth one sounds rather interesting, though..

Insights on UChicago, Brown and Yale?

hi! I'm drawn to all three of these colleges but I don't want to apply to too many reaches (my college list is WAY too long). Could any current/former students give some insights on their experiences? What are some big differences? I've heard people talk about open curriculum vs. core, different locations, etc. But what are the impacts of these differences? I really want to do STEM internships and study abroad- is there a lot of support available for these types of things? Also- I care a lot about the having a close-knit community (Yale's residential houses sound really appealing). I'm particularly interested in a math, physics, computer science or EE major, but I care a lot about the humanities as well. Yale's Math and Philosophy major sounds super interesting. What are these departments like at each university? I feel like all of them must have good departments- are there any significant differences? I think I want to apply early to one of these schools and I'm trying to figure out which one. Right now I'm leaning toward Yale SCEA, but I think that's because I know more about it. Insights on the other schools (and Yale as well) would be much appreciated. thank you so much!

Does everyone move in on that Friday or is it more of mixed lot over the entire weekend? Trying to figure out if DH and I need to get off of work or if we can move DS in on Sunday.

Another consumerist question -- printers/electronics

$

In our household, all electronics have been shared, so I'm trying to figure out what DC needs for college. U of C materials seem to suggest that students need not bring printers. Personally, given my own work habits, I'm skeptical. DC is agnostic. What's the norm (if there is one)? Are the dorm and library printers convenient, reliable and relatively standardized? Is most work submitted (and/or shared) electronically anyway? In case it matters, DC's likely to be taking bio, stats, French, and linguistic courses and to generally be doing something musical. Money's not the main issue from my POV -- it's more about space and convenience.

Thoughts on offbeat essay?

I tried hard to write an actual essay for the UChicago "extended essay." Instead, I wrote an intelligent but irreverent parody of a film noir. This was a much better "essay" for me to write because it exemplified my offbeat sense of humor. I understand that you are supposed to "be yourself" with college essays, but is this too much of "myself?" It makes perfect sense with the prompt, but it's completely different from any other UChicago essays I've read. The adults I've talked to (none of whom share my sense of humor) all told me it was a terrible idea, but I love it. Should I keep going with this weird (but authentic) idea or try to write a new one?

Where to buy Winter clothes

My D will be attending UChicago this fall. We will be in Chicago for a week before orientation. We will be driving her up there so making it a family trip/vacation. So we actually have time to buy her winter wardrobe while there. Can anyone recommend a place that would have winter gear at reasonable prices? The concern is getting a really good coat and winter boots. Also, she loves shopping at resale shops and has gotten some really good deals at places like that. We will have a car. I don't know if there are outlet malls around. Any help appreciated. My S also went somewhere a lot colder than home but he was easy. He's a minimalist and was not super concerned about wardrobe stuff. Bought some stuff at Goodwill and he was good to go.

In 16-17: UChicago will Have EA, ED, EDII, and RD

It's up on their Financial Aid page already - for 16-17, students can apply EA, ED, EDII, and then RD: https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/costs/apply-for-aid This is ridiculous. Seriously, why even bother having an RD round then? Between EA, ED, and EDII, Chicago can easily fill 70-80% of the class, and have an absurdly high yield. All these options also just further confuse the process.

AlcoholEdu and Haven

Does anyone know where/how I can find the AlcoholEdu and Haven online programs? I know that all newly enrolled uchicago students (like me!) must complete AlcoholEdu and Haven before August 24. The uchicago website says I can access the tests via the "Incoming Students portal" but I can't find the tests anywhere on the my.uchicago.edu portal, which is what I assume they're talking about? I even looked through the uPortal and couldn't find the tests anywhere. Sorry if this is a stupid question but what am I missing?

Why don't these Enrollment numbers add up?

So I was looking at the Enrollment report for UChicago and noticed in Table 8 of this document https://registrar.uchicago.edu/sites/registrar.uchicago.edu/files/uploads/EOQ Spring 2016_2016_0623.pdf that Asian enrollment is (957/5539, i.e around 17%) Then I went back and checked the Class profile for the class of 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. Each of them listed the Asian students (US Asians, not international) incoming students were 2015 - 18.51% of 1,411 Students (http://web.archive.org/web/20121021072816/https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/apply/classprofile.shtml) 2016 - 27.31% of 1,527 Students (http://web.archive.org/web/20130521014918/https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/apply/classprofile.shtml) 2017 - 28.26% of 1,426 Students (http://web.archive.org/web/20150416202653/http://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/apply/class-profile) 2018 - 22.25% of 1,427 (http://web.archive.org/web/20150517175022/http://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/apply/class-profile) 2019 - 28.17% of 1,537 Students (https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/page/profile-class-2019) So why don't the numbers match? How could Chicago have recruited well over 25% Asian Americans in three of the last 5 years and still have total number of Asians at 957, instead of over 1,500 unless a large number of them are dropping out of school? Thoughts??

Hand-wringing and complaining about UChicago's admit strategies

I have noticed that parents and students on this forum section seem to complain a lot about UChicago's admit strategies. There is an interesting discussion on this thread for example http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-chicago/1901459-in-16-17-uchicago-will-have-ea-ed-edii-and-rd-p1.html I don't see that kind of complaining in other forum sections. I don't believe that Chicago is doing anything that much radically different from other schools, but somehow it is always held up to a different and much higher standard by its alums, parents of students studying there now, current students and prospects. I don't necessarily think this is bad, but I am just curious whether the stakeholders here are different from ones that participate and post regularly in other sections on CC. Any thoughts on this? Do people participating in on the UChicago CC forums complain more about the school than people participating in other sections? Is Chicago being held to a different standard? Does UChicago generally attract folks who always see the cup as half empty rather than half full? Does this kind of self criticism indicate a kind of intellectual vigor that should be present in all the college sections? Does the Chicago forum section see a lot less self congratulatory posts than other forum sections? If so, why?

"Best" Majors at U of C?

I want to know what people think Chicago is best know for, since, well, it's well-known for most things. Besides economics and maybe biology, what majors do people find to lead to the most opportunities at U of C? I've never really heard anyone cite one great major/discipline, as all of them are highly-regarded in the first place.

Yet another UChicago first-year willing to talk! (Linguistics major!)

Hi! I'm a first year at UChicago and I love helping people online. Currently, I live in a double in South and I am hoping to get a single next year! I am a prospective linguistics major, with an East Asian Language and Culture minor. I came from a not-so-rich public high school in New Jersey so if people are concerned about adjustment they can ask me about that! I'm not quite sure what else to say, so I'm gonna list my classes and extracurriculars/RSOs! Courses: Self, Culture and Society (SOSC core, 3 quarters) Language and the Human (HUM core, 3 quarters) Korean (1st year, 3 quarters) Intro to Linguistics Intro to Semantics and Pragmatics Extracurriculars: Women's Ensemble (Choir) Maroon TV Qworum (queer women's group) Q&A (lgbt group) Emerging Minds (social justice program, application only) House Council (PSAC rep)

Chance me for UChicago? (Low GPA, High SAT)

Hey guys!! So my annoying friend posted a "Chance me" thread earlier today for UChicago against my will, so if the stats/info seem similar to Crzcorgi's post, that would be why! ;) Here are my stats/extracurriculars/etc: GPA: UW 3.2, W 3.35 (LOL hopefully better with senior year 1st semester!) SAT: (single sitting) 2330 - 730 Math, 800 CR and Writing Course rigor: pretty hard throughout Senior year schedule: AP Econ/Poli Sci, AP Computer Science, Advanced Journalism, AP Lit, AP Stats, AP Spanish (I skipped a year of Spanish, if that makes any difference!) Extracurricular: Tutoring peers and children, mentoring 5th graders, helping kids with foreign parents in English, computer/business internship, a few clubs and board positions, science fair, national history day, 365 community service/volunteer hours Awards: National History Day county blue ribbon, national spanish exam Gold 97th percentile, ap scholar/national merit whatever Essays: brilliant, I hope xD Rec letters: brilliant Ethnicity: I would fit under the "Asian American" category. For my common app essay, I wrote about why my GPA is so horrendous. It's not exactly a good excuse (I was unmotivated and didn't care and then went through something that motivated me), but it's a pretty well-written essay. You guys can be mean! ;) UChicago is my #1, but I know it's quite a reach with my GPA!

Banks and ATM's at UChicago

My D needs to look more into this but tells tells me that there are no Chase ATM's on campus or nearby. We actually use our credit union but had just opened a Chase account because it gave me a great deal on direct deposit from my work. My S did some virtual banking thing when he went off to college. I had wanted him to open something at a brick and mortar (PNC in Pittsburgh) when we dropped him off at CMU but he insisted on this virtual bank. I think she feels more comfortable with opening an account that is accessible to UChicago students- having a branch/ATM's nearby.
