Is My Why Chicago Essay Too Long?

$

I just completed my Why Chicago essay for the Early Action deadline and currently it is a little less than 500 words. I find the essay to be really strong, and can't really find much to delete. Is there any word count for this essay? I can't find it on the UChicago website or the Common App. Thanks!

"Optional" essay?

Is the UChicago "optional" favorites essay really optional? I know a majority of you will say that it's another chance to show something about you, but I'd rather be evaluated on the basis of a strong common app essay, a strong Why UChicago? essay, and a strong uncommon essay than the aforementioned and a weaker favorites essay. Is the rationale valid? Must I still write the favorites essay?

Is a 33 good for UChicago?

I have been getting a lot from them- they even sent me a T Shirt. I'm applying ED, and I've felt good about everything so far, but I'm afraid my ACT (33) is a bit low. (If it helps, I'm submitting 4 AP scores: AP World (5), APUSH (5), AP Lang (5) and AP Euro (4)). I go to a competitive high school, and the only class I'm taking that isn't honors is math- I'm terrible at math. I got perfect scores on reading/writing for ACT, but the math/science scores brought my composite down. I want to be a history major and I worked my love of history into my supplemental essay (my creative writing teacher, whom I admire most and went to Princeton, read it and said he thought it was a strong essay for UChicago). I'm afraid my ACT score is going to bring my application down. Should I re-take it?

U of Chicago Early action question-Please help

If I am applying early action (vs Early decision) to Chicago, do you all think I will have less or more of a chance of being admitted through early action if I am applying for financial aid. I do not know if we will get much (if any) financial aid, so would it be better to not apply for financial aid (they make you check that box on the Common App, asking if you plan to apply for financial aid) when going Early Action since I probably will not qualify for any aid anyways. Thank you for your help. RIght now, I am not ready to apply ED. I wish Chicago did not have so many admission choices for this year.

UChicago workload/close-knit community?

So story is, I've attended a rigorous college prep high school. In my junior year I was able to maintain my 4.0 and relax on Friday nights while getting 4 hours of sleep+a short nap. For college, I don't want to spend all my time on academics. I want to pursue extracurriculars and LEARN but not have to constantly stress about grades as I'm learning. I want to have time to pursue personal passions like drawing and writing creative narratives. TL;DR I'm ready to jump in the deep end, but not a sinkhole. What's the undergrad workload like (how many hours do you spend on academics and class work a day) and is the experience less jarring for those coming from a college prep school? Also, is there a close-knit/welcoming community? Everyone sounds so smart and ambitious, it's kind of intimidating.

On the uchicago account there is a section for the supplements. Do you upload all your supplements there despite the fact that all of them are in the common app?

Hey guys. So are we going to start this discussion already. Who's applying?

I really want to go to the University of Chicago. I want to apply ED to increase my chances as much as possible. However, most FA calculators predict that I'd have to pay about 53k after grants. My parents don't want to pay this much but I really want to apply ED. I made a deal with them. IF i get accepted, they will pay half the tuition and I'll cover the rest, which if the estimates are right, will be around 27k. If I only rent textbooks, eat really cheap food, get some scholarships, and work everyday I think I should be able to amass about 15-20k and then leave the rest as debt. I know that you shouldn't apply ED if not very financially secure but I am willing to work very hard to make this dream come true. However, are my goals just way too unrealistic or should I try?

How is the aid?

I'm still not sure if I should apply EA or ED. Using the College Board NPC, it estimated that I would have to pay about 18k per year. However, this seems too good to be true. For the record, my family made about 100k in 2015 and we have around 20k in deductibles. We also have no investments or anything like that and about 40k in savings. Is the college board NPC bologne or is it legit? If its legit or even semi legit i will certainly apply ED, but if not then I will go the EA route.

So I submitted my EA app to UChicago at 11:58 central time (my time) and received the common app's email saying my app was registered and whatnot, with proof of it being 11:58. Online though, everything says I submitted EA Nov. 2 at 12:58 eastern time. Did my application go through? Do they just look at what my time zone was or how does this work? Please help

Frat Bros at UChicago

https://www.chicagomaroon.com/article/2016/10/4/induction-night-phi-delt-pledges-served-copious-am/ The article describes an intense initiation process! Years ago, frats would bend over backwards to take pretty much anyone who showed interest. Nowadays, it looks like hazing, lawsuits, "beer boat races," and more have wormed there way in here. The admin has erred in allowing frats to be the place for "non-traditional" Chicago students - and in encouraging them to expand. Typical to Chicago, they didn't think carefully enough about molding the social culture/aspect of the school as the institution broadened its reach.

UChicago Students' High School Grades?

Hey everyone! I'm currently an (Asian ;-;) high school junior, and I have begun to refine my college research process. Currently, UChicago is at the top of my list because, so far, everything about it appeals to me as a person, a student, and an intellectual. That being said, I'm somewhat worried about my grades. My freshman year grades were around 3.65, and although I showed a marked improvement sophomore year (and thus far, this year), I think that I'll still end this year with a cumulative 3.8-3.9ish UW GPA (with the most challenging courseload). The several classes I got Bs and B+s in were generally STEM-related fields (not exactly my forte, nor is it something I would pursue), but in humanities/arts classes, I generally receive good grades. I am curious if similar situations were common among UChicago-accepted students. I only know two accepted students (both had similar situations), so I would like to gain a wider perspective, not even necessarily just to assuage my fear. How much of the student body is "pointed", so to speak, in one or two general areas? Obviously, colleges value upward trends and look at the whole thing holistically, and GPA isn't the only thing that matters, but I'm curious at how UChicago specifically addresses and applies these aspects. Partially because I'm kind of intimidated by my lower GPA, but mostly because I want to know how much of the student body has had similar experiences and how they circumvented it. Thanks in advance!

Wishing I had gone to UChicago

Five years ago, I was accepted into UChicago and a number of other schools. I chose one of the other schools. Now that I'm an alum, I truly regret not attending UChicago. I feel like Chicago is a school at which I would have been genuinely happy and made some true friends. Although I did well academically at my alma mater, I missed the feeling of UChicago, and I didn't develop any true friendships. Now Chicago has jumped the rankings significantly and everywhere I go (especially abroad), people say "wow, UChicago" with such reverence and my own alma mater with apathy. I constantly think about undoing this mistake, but I'm in professional school right now and cannot sacrifice time just to pursue a Master's at Chicago if I could. I'm worried that a Master's degree would not have the same feel as the undergrad experience. If only there was a way to experience life as an undergrad again...

Just curious, has anyone ever gotten a 4.0 at UChicago? Also, I want to attend a HYS law school after college and based off many forums, the average GPA at UChicago is way lower than the median gpa's at the HYS schools. Do they take undergrad difficulty into account?

How stressful is the University of Chicago and how heavy is the workload?

Hi, I am a high school sophomore and a prospective student for the University of Chicago. Yesterday I went on a tour of the school, I loved it but I forgot to ask the question "How stressful is the University of Chicago and how heavy is the workload?"
