Are Supplemental Materials Important

$

So I applied to Chicago Early a few days ago, but decided not to send in any supplemental materials, as I felt the research and music I had done wasn't particularly impressive, and also as the admissions site mentioned to "Please keep in mind that more is not always better." Both of the activities were mentioned in my Common App Activities section, though, so I also felt adding them as supplements wouldn't necessarily add anything to my application. However, I'm starting to second guess that decision a little bit. I was wondering how common/rare it is to send in the supplements, if it's an important part of the application, and if there's any point in submitting them now.

Art Portfolio?

Hey, I sent in my application (ED) a week ago, but I'm worried about my art portfolio. I uploaded some of my supplemental arts material through the portfolio section in my UChicago Account online, but it seems like there's no indication that they've received it—no green checkmarks like other parts of the application. Also, it looks like I can still edit my portfolio online, but wouldn't it be locked after a certain date? Ah I don't know! Is this normal? Do they ever acknowledge that they've received my portfolio at all? And can I just...edit it whenever I want, then? I'm just worried that they might overlook my portfolio. It's of decent quality, and art is really important to me.

EA or ED applicants - has anyone been contacted by UChicago about an interview yet?

Just wondering - it's a pretty small time window to do interviews for EA and ED and get the results in for a December 15 decision.

Struggling with a Class, Any Options

My K is taking a required class, supposedly the easy one. He has no problem with the class or the homework but has done very poorly on both tests and it is too late to drop it. Is there a P/F option, should he take a W? What are those deadlines? This would leave him with 2 classes (he is a freshman). He really does not want to retake this class, just wants to move on but I am concerned about his GPA.

On my UChicago account, it says that my test score was received in april. But that's because i used a free score send back then. I sent them more test scores in october, but the only indication of test score on my account is the april one. Can i assume they got my other scores?

Does anyone know what the admissions history is for Early Action (the earliest UChic starts to send admission letters)? I know they say by January or mid-December or whatever, but I was hoping to know when the first round of letters comes out.

I am a junior in high school looking for schools to apply to next year. So far I've seen how academically strong U Chicago is and that it has a good program in Chemisty, my intended major as of now. What is the culture like at U Chicago? How tight knit is the community? How "nerdy" are the students (I'm a huge book nerd)? Basically just sell me the college.

Chance Me (pretty please)

Hi! I am a senior this year and have finished my application for UChicago (early action). It is my dream school, but I don't see myself having a good chance of getting in. I've kind of been freaking out and have found myself unable to wait for decisions to be released. I have read through all 250 pages of threads relating to UChicago on college confidential, and I finally decided to make my own post. So can anyone let me know what they think of my stats? I'm not one of these super geniuses who started building a computer from scratch at the age of 8, so I feel a bit nervous about my chances of being accepted...when chances are, that I will be deferred/rejected :( GPA: 4.4 W / 3.969 UW SAT: 1460 Subject tests: didn't take any ACT: 32 Rank: 12/674 AP Scores: AP World History (5), AP Literature (5), AP Chemistry (4), AP Human Geography (4), AP US History (4) Senior Year Course Load: AP Calculus, AP Psychology, AP Latin, AP Microeconomics, AP Government, AP Language, AP Environmental Science Extracurriculars: Latin Club National Honor Society National Art Honor Society Art Club Volunteering: around 150 hours, don't really keep track most of them are through clubs I'm in, like helping out with art camp over the summer and various community service activities through NHS and NAHS Awards: AP Scholar with distinction Graduating Summa Cum Laude national awards on Latin tests (i.e. national Latin exam) Essays: Personal essay: 8/10. I wrote about my experience living in a different country, connecting it to other aspects of my life (struggles with poverty, different cultural background than my classmates) and connected it to my personality as well. Supplement 1: 7-8/10. I chose the vestigial structures prompt. I wrote about books, and I really hoped my passion shined through. Basically, I explained how books were seen as something vestigial in this day and age in the face of technology. Why uChicago: specific, truly showed my love for this school (it is my dream school), but it wasn't creative or fancy like some of the others I have seen. It was very straight to the point. Optional essay: 6-7/10. It was nothing special. Just tried to show what I was passionate about. Recs: Teacher 1 : 8/10 from my AP lit teacher he is a great writer and really liked me and my writing Teacher 2 : 7/10 from my honors bio teacher Counselor: 5/10 I'm assuming it is pretty general considering that I go to a large school where the counselors rarely get to know the students Other: Applied for financial aid: yes I am a female State: Midwest, near Chicago School type: public, large Ethnicity: European (parents are from a small country in Europe) I was born out of the country but immigrated to the U.S. at a young age Income Bracket: approximately 30k Hook: first generation college student, bilingual? I don't really know if either is considered a hook I appreciate anyone who has taken the time to read through my post!! Good luck to everyone else applying this year!

What does a 5 on AP Calculus BC get you?

Here's what the website says: AP Exam Score Credit Awarded 2016-17 based on exams offered in May 2016 Calculus BC 5 MATH 15100-15200 † ========================================= Students may select from the following list of courses to fulfill the requirement in the mathematical sciences. Students must meet this requirement with the first two quarters of a calculus sequence if they are preparing for the health professions or if they anticipate majors in the physical or biological sciences, Economics, Psychology, or Public Policy Studies. Other restrictions may apply. Students should consult their College adviser or departmental counselor about course choices. CMSC 10200 Introduction to Programming for the World Wide Web II 100 CMSC 10500-10600 Fundamentals of Computer Programming I-II 200 CMSC 11000-11100 Multimedia Programming as an Interdisciplinary Art I-II 200 CMSC 12100-12200 Computer Science with Applications I-II 200 CMSC 15100-15200 Introduction to Computer Science I-II 200 CMSC 16100-16200 Honors Introduction to Computer Science I-II 200 MATH 11200-11300 Studies in Mathematics I-II 200 MATH 13100-13200 Elementary Functions and Calculus I-II 200 MATH 15100-15200 Calculus I-II 200 MATH 16100-16200 Honors Calculus I-II 200 STAT 20000 Elementary Statistics 100 Statistics AP credit Calculus BC AP credit (score of 5); or placement into MATH 15300 through placement test Calculus BC AP credit (score of 4); or placement into MATH 15200 through placement test* Calculus AB AP credit (score of 5); or placement into MATH 15200 through placement test* * MATH 13100 Elementary Functions and Calculus I, MATH 15100 Calculus I, and MATH 16100 Honors Calculus I may be used to meet the general education requirement in mathematical sciences only if MATH 13200 Elementary Functions and Calculus II, MATH 15200 Calculus II, or MATH 16200 Honors Calculus II is also taken. ========================================= I don't see how the listing of "Calculus BC AP credit (score of 5)" in the list of "courses to fulfill the requirement of mathematical sciences can mean anything other than that a score of 5 on the BC Calculus exam fulfills the Core requirement for 2 quarters of math. I read this to also mean that a 5 on the BC Calculus exam actually gives the student credit for MATH 15100 and 15200 and satisfies the requirement for a Psychology major. Am I wrong about any of this? ========================================= If I AM wrong about Calculus, what options would a Humanities major who has a 5 on BC Calc and a 5 on AP Statistics (and thus supposedly has credit for a semester of statistics, so one quarter of core math) have to meet the math/physical science/biological science gen ed requirements? Can the AP Statistics credit be combined with CMSC 11000 Multimedia Programming as an Interdisciplinary Art I, or must both of those classes be taken in sequence to get 2 credits? (It would appear not, because it specifically says that both Calc 1 and Calc 2 must be taken if being used for the core requirement, but it doesn't say that about the Multimedia Programming sequence.) And what is CMSC 11000 like - is it appropriate for a student majoring in the humanities who has no computer programming experience at all? Are there any other reasonable options? If the student uses the AP Statistics credit and isn't able to get a second math general ed credit, what are the options for fulfilling the 6 math/physical science/biological science gen ed requirements?

Is it just when you put down your college deposit (and/or housing deposit)? Or do you actually have to submit your irrevocable preferences for where you'd like to live (the student will need to do more research about that). Thanks.

UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

Hello everyone, Welcome! If you're reading this, I'll assume you're interested in learning more about UChicago-- an excellent choice, if I do say so myself. I'm Grace*, a Senior Admissions Counselor and a member of the Outreach team in the admissions office here, and a college alumna. Over this year, I'll be on hand to answer any questions you might have about UChicago and the opportunities we offer. Although CC can be a good way to have general questions answered, your best source of information in the application cycle is and still will be your regional admissions counselor and our website, collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu. You can find out who your regional counselor is by looking at the "Contact Us" portion of our website, which should be updated with our new territories soon; if you're from my neighborhood (Virginia and Maryland minus DC and immediate suburbs, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota) I'd love to hear from you, but would appreciate if you'd contact me at the address listed on that page. Further, I'll be checking this account frequently but not constantly, so if you have an urgent question please go ahead and defer to your regional counselor or our general office contact line listed on that page. If you'd like to get in direct contact with a current student, feel free to do so in a separate post, or by e-mailing psac@uchicago.edu. Although I hope this goes without saying, I am not able to "chance" you or to offer you any information about your likelihood of admission or your application status. I'm also not able to offer information about specific financial aid decisions or individual admissions decisions. Again, if you have specific questions about your application, please reach out to your regional counselor. I am, however, happy to be here, and happy to let you know anything you'd like to know about UChicago. So... ask away! Best, Grace Chapin *Some of you may remember me from my days as a student posting here-- yes, I am "that Grace". I'm full-time counseling staff now, so although you may be tempted, please do go ahead and defer your student life questions to our current students; as I am now officially an old person, I'm sure they'll be able to answer them much more accurately than I could :)

hello!! oKAY SO I KNOW RD IS A MOONSHOT. NOT SAYING THAT EA ISN'T, BUT WOW I DIDN'T KNOW HOW LOW THE RD ACCEPTANCE RATE WAS >.< (i would've applied ea!! i love uchi!! but i DIDN'T RESEARCH IT EARLY ENOUGH AND NOW I LOVE IT BUT IT IS ALSO TOO LATE FOR EA :( i might apply ed2 though?) anyway - here are my stats :) GPA: 4.31 W on a 4.0 scale, 4.0 UW GPA SAT: 2360 (1 sitting - 800M, 800W/10 essay, 760CR) SAT Subjects: World History: 800, Math II: 780, Chemistry: 770 AP Scores: Chemistry (4), US History (5), English Language (5), World History (5) Senior Courses: AP Spanish Language, AP Literature, AP US Government, Leadership (student government! gotta have the class to be in it though), AP Physics 1, AP Calculus AB College Courses: Took Fundamentals of Computer Science & Introduction to Human Development over the summer (A+s in both) Ranking: 2/390 Ethnicity: Filipino, Chinese Legacy: Nope! (parents both went to school in the PHP) Awards: AP Scholar with Honor, National Merit Commended, Science Olympiad medals [Regionals] (1st, 5th - first time last year), NHS (?), couple of school academic/community service awards, Best Freshman Girl in cross country, couple of awards for stories in school-wide writing contests, Congressional Merit Award (award for seniors in 10th Congressional District in CA) Specifics Extracurriculars: - Science Olympiad (11-12): placed in regionals, part of first team. I learned Jmol and protein modeling for protein modeling and it is HANDS DOWN my favorite event! I'm so sad that it's not a regional event for us this year. - Performed (Ensemble) in school performance of Aladdin (10). I wish I was in another musical lol - music is life! - Performing in talent show (11) + general music - Music Club member (10), write own songs + have active Soundcloud/Youtube channel, sang national anthem twice, performed at local festival, self-taught guitar, ukulele (9-12) - Cross Country/Track (9), continual recreational running, awards in local race (9-12) (I WAS LW VARSITY XC DURING FRESHMAN YEAR BUT I STOPPED RUNNING HAHAHA RIP) - Key Club - served as Secretary (12)/Treasurer (11) (10-12). First experience working in an officer team! - Help tutor students in HYPE (tutoring club); tutor (10-12) & VP (12); made a website, various advertising materials for club (10-12). I love this ahh! It's helped me a lot with public speaking skills. - Served as freshman mentor (like a Link Crew leader) (11-12) - Commissioner in KHS Leadership, helped with rallies (esp backdrops, PLANNING - e.g. writing scripts, creating games, assigning jobs, etc.), posters, and promotion for the school; designed senior shirt (11-12). I love Leadership more than I can express, it's probably the thing I'm most glad I joined in HS because it's both brought me out of my shell and helped me learn organizational/leadership/time-management/socialization skills. - Babysitting sister (throughout HS, lol - I've helped teach her how to read/walk! Having a sister WAY younger is in turns insane and awesome and annoying) Summer activities: - Interned last summer (11-12 summer) at my local newspaper! Super rad because I got to understand the workings of journalism, publish articles, interview people, and learn how to call adult coworkers who are decades older by their first names, lol. Also, I was exposed to the journalistic style of writing, which was pretty interesting, and it changed my entire view on my city. Recommendations: - English teacher: Had him for Lang. Apparently he calls me "great" and talks about me a lot BUT HE'S TOTALLY OVERHYPING ME :') He was super pumped to write me a letter, plus he serves as a sort of mentor to me. - Calc teacher: Had him for 2 years (Algebra 2 Pre-AP, AP Calc AB). He speaks really highly of me at parent-teacher conferences, according to my mom. Idk how personal it'll be though? - Editor of local newspaper I interned at: Extra rec! 7-8/10? He said some pretty nice things about my traits but didn't necessarily touch on my writing. -Counselor: I think it'd be okay, he's talked to me a fair bit while I straightened out my schedule for this year. Essays: - Common App: I FEEL LIKE IT'S BORING BUT WHATEVER IT'S HONESTLY THE MOST CANDID I COULD BE ABOUT MY INTERESTS?? wrote about my early love of reading & how that catalyzed my love for writing, then branched out about how I began to write on different subjects - from myself, to other people, and finally to science. I tie it into wanting to study genes/genetic engineering. - Extended: HAHHAHAHAH. Still figuring out what to do for this one, but I've written an initial draft using the square one prompt. AGAIN I FEEL LIKE I'M VERY MUNDANE AND BORING OOPS. I talked about choices, and beginnings, and choosing a peppermint mocha instead of a caramel macchiato at Starbucks. -Why UChi? OH BOY AHH. Haven't written it yet, but will probably talk about the candid community at UChi that encourages discussion and how I feel that the school fosters individual thought in a way that other colleges I've looked at haven't (wellll hopefully this sounds better in actual essay format than I've described it) -Favorite books/art/inspirational stuff: Talking about Fresh Off The Boat (the book), Chance the Rapper, Childish Gambino, The Godfather, Crime & Punishment, and Hamilton :) Prospective major: I'm applying as molecular engineering (1st choice), polisci (2nd choice), & creative writing (3rd choice). thanks for reading through this :)

Saw it with my own eyes and saw it on the #uchicago twitter hastag: https://twitter.com/mike_smith267/status/805596881120280576 There are more all over the campus plastered on doors and around walkways on the campus. This is the world we live in... Some neo-nazi group who call them selves "atomwaffen division" form Ironmarch.org (some terrible fascist forum, don't bother even looking at it) claim to have done this. This type of hatred is NOT okay on campus and I'd think the university would stop stuff like this, guess they just don't care. Oh well right?....
